Bed Headboards on a Dime
77Originally headboards were made to keep pillows from falling to the floor. Today, headboards can be used in many different ways. In todays economy and with our landfills getting larger I believe we should recycle and reuse. With that in mind what better way to create a piece of art in our headboards. Thus meaning do it yourself projects that are fun to do and most importantly low in cost.
Blown up Photograph Headboard
One great way to create a headboard for any bedroom is using a photograph. Being an absolute lover of photographs myself this idea is one I will try to create as well. To create this look you will need a blown up photograph. If you don't have just the right photos to use their are many websites to choose from.
Here are a few sites for you to rummage through and best of all are free to use.
Once you have choosen your image you can go to a printing store such as Kinkos and they will enlarge it for you. If you are not sure what size ask the clerk and they should be able to tell you what would look best.
Check out Blockposters.com, this site is claiming it will enlarge any photo FREE. All you have to do is upload an image from your computer and choose how many sheets wide you would like your poster to be once printed. After you have choosen the right picture, you can download the PDF file containing your newly created images and print each one massively blown up, resulting in a huge poster to stick on your wall. You can buy some spray adhesive and a proper mounting board from your local craft store and join them together. If you want to attach it directly to the wall you could use Krylon easy tack repositionable adhesive spray, cost about $5.00. With this adhesive it is very easy to remove and will not damage the wall. There you have it a unique, super simple, low in cost and especially fun to do. With this idea you could change the photo constantly and retire the old ones to different parts of the house. Use them as bed headboards or display them on the wall, after all it is art.
The Album Headboard
Made of plywood, plexiglass and vintage album covers. The plexiglass face on the album headboard can easily be removed to change the album art or insert photos. Ok don't have the plywood or plexiglass you say. Gather a bunch of picture frames and insert photos or album covers or even fabric into them. Hang them on the wall close together to create this effect. ( If you don't have any picture frames or need more go to your nearest dollar store. If they are too plain spray paint them the color you would like. Possibly use a variety of colors to make them pop.)
Calling all stencilers
Ok all you stencilers, go to town with these amazing stencils. Not only can you stencil yourself a bed headboard but then stencil your walls. The sky is the limit.
How lovely is this iron headboard from Designer Stencils and is offered in twin, full, queen, or king sizes.
This photo below, found on Flickr, pictures a headboard stencil from The Stencil Library. So chic.
Picture below:
This stenciled headboard, found on POINTclickHOME uses The Stencil Library's Birds & Blossom #1 stencil.
Not only can you stencil a headboard but you can enhance the headboard you already have and stencil directly on it. With the video below it shows you how to make a simple headboard using plywood, and material but you could also stencil the material and there you have it simply fabulous.
So go on create a bed headboard of your own.

I love these ideas! I've been looking for something to go over a large sofa in my living room and I may adapt one of these ideas to solve that problem.
Some neat ideas here! :)
I love the painted on headboards, but how do you keep the pillows on the bed? The only reason I have a real headboard, instead of hanging a quilt on the wall, or something of the sort, is to keep from loosing them during the night.
Great video on how to make a headboard, and I love the idea of creating a headboard from paint or found objects as well. Nice hub.
I love the idea of recycling materials to create a new headboard, and you show some really great examples.
My headboard was painted green since this is my favorite!
Using a photo for a headboard is a great idea. Never thought of it. Nice hub!
